personal wiki
I think more people should be aware of the personal wiki. Or personal garden, if you're more indieweb than me. I think pretty much everybody could find good use of one.
I first came across the idea of a personal wiki several years ago while I was preparing to write my novel for National Novel Writing Month. I never fully adopted it, but recently I decided to fully commit to TiddlyWiki as a catch-all digital notebook for absolutely everything. Bookmarks, notes, blog post ideas, meeting notes, or todo lists could go in there. I have a bookmarks folder in Firefox that goes back at least 15 years. It's semi-organized into folders for music, programming, cooking, calisthenics, etc., but most of it ends up in a "misc" folder with hundreds of entries. Turning this into a personal wiki would allow me to write notes, link together entries, and most importantly search to find stuff.
The hipster inside of me is disappointed that I'm not using paper notecards, a pinboard, and red string. But the benefit of being able to search is overwhelming. Not to mention the ability to potentially sync my wiki to my phone.
The major disadvantage is that personal wikis haven't really caught on, and so they aren't the most user-friendly. I like TiddlyWiki the best right now because it's all contained in a single html file, but it requires you to use special software to save it due to browser limitations, so there's a bit of work involved to set it up.
I only started recently so I don't have many thoughts yet, but I'll report back in a few weeks when the experiment is properly underway.
